SSL Certificates, what are they?
Websites that have this security can be recognized by the closed lock and the https:// in the address bar. For example, you can see this on the login page of your bank. An SSL Certificate is required for an SSL connection. A user can use an SSL Certificate to see who the owner of the website is and who issued the certificate.
If companies or organizations want to use this, they need an SSL Certificate. An SSL Certificate is a small text file that contains a digital cryptographic key that contains data about your organization, such as:

An organization must install an SSL Certificate on their web server so that every visitor can make a secure connection to their website. Depending on the SSL Certificate type chosen, an organization must go through a number of validation steps to ensure that the SSL Certificate is issued to the company requesting it. Once installed, it is possible to connect to the website via a https:// connection. Once a secure connection is established, all web traffic between the web server and the web browser will be secured.
Legal requirements
The Personal Data Protection Act (Wbp) states that it is mandatory to secure the sending of personal data via the internet. However, it still happens far too often that this information is sent over the internet without any form of security.
The CBP therefore ensures that this law is complied with. Fines for non-compliance with the rules are high! Apart from this fine, the negligent company also runs the risk of being held liable for the damage. The consequences for the victims of internet fraud can be significant. Criminals obtain credit card information and/or other personal data via websites that appear reliable and then enter into financial obligations in the name of the stolen identity. The Dutch government recognizes this problem. The College Bescherming Persoonsgegevens (CBP) therefore advises using an SSL Certificate.
